Why So Serious?

(video below)

"Let's get serious about this!"

"You're not taking this seriously!"

"This is serious business..."

People use the word serious a lot, and generally consider it a good thing to be serious, or to take things seriously...

Well, firstly, what does "serious" mean?

There are a few definitions, but let's look at a couple:

1. Requiring thought, concentration, or application - such as a serious task.

This is a good thing generally. Nothing wrong with doing your work in a concentrated way!

Another definition is:

2. That which is of importance, matters a lot, solemn, heavy, weighted and almost grim... such as, "Don't joke around while at work, it's serious!"

We can say serious means:

This is not a good thing - although it's very, very common for people to live very serious lives.

There is not much smiling - things are heavy and serious!

For example, work can be quite serious when there is big punishment if you don't go to work!

People might think that if you don't go to work, you won't get your paycheck. If you don't get a paycheck, you can't pay your mortgage. If you can't pay your mortgage, you won't have a place to stay! If you don't have a place to stay, you will have issues in your marriage. If you have issues in your marriage... You get it.

So... you go to work.

This is very serious. It's heavy. It's grim. It's no fun! It's serious...

So there's a threat that if you don't do it, there'll be a punishment. And that feeling can make you heavy because if you don't do it you're going to get punished. Or if you don't make your goal, your boss is going to get mad at you. Or if you don't make enough money, you're going to be out on the streets...

That heaviness is a direct block to any creativity whatsoever! You are putting on yourself this force, along with forces from other people that you take on because you're worried of their punishment. So you take it on yourself, and you get heavy about it.

When you're heavy like that, you can't look up, you can't truly focus, and you can't CREATE!

And only when you are in a light, creative, enjoyable space, can you make forward progress. Nobody creates when they are under punishment. Or if there's a gun to their head, they're not going to be creating.

So simply and shortly put, what is my message to you today?

Whatever you're busy with, don't get heavy and serious. Step back. Take a look at how you can rather be creative about it. And by being creative, you will come up with solutions and make forward progress. Smile! Nothing is THAT important - even if it seems like it is! And somehow, things will come to you - they will work out! At least it will better than trying to do it with a frown, with being heavy and serious!

Play the game of life. Find ways to create. And you'll see it'll help you out.
