The 90–9–1 Rule: The Real Formula Behind Business Success

Walk into almost any business event and you'll hear the same advice:

"Network more."

People spend thousands of dollars attending conferences, collecting business cards, adding connections on LinkedIn, and trying to meet the "right people." They believe that if they could just meet the perfect investor, customer, mentor, or partner, everything would change.

And yes, networking is important.

But it's nowhere near as important as most people think.

In fact, when I was starting in business my dad taught me that networking represents only 9% of business success, and before long, it was clear to me how right he was.

He said the remaining 91% has nothing to do with networking.

He called it The 90–9–1 Rule.

(and stay with me, because I have an amazing free training for you at the end)

The 9% Networking

Networking absolutely matters.

Relationships open doors.Referrals create opportunities.Introductions accelerate growth.

But networking is only valuable when there's something worth connecting people to.

Imagine taking a homeless person...

He has no business, no systems, no plan...

Now we introduce him to the President of the United States.

Amazing networking.

Would that meeting suddenly make them successful?

Of course not.

Or imagine an entrepreneur who has spent five years failing in business because they cannot market, sell, organize, or execute.

Now imagine introducing that entrepreneur to the top 10 CEO's in the country.

Would those introductions magically solve their problems?

Again, no.

The networking itself isn't the problem.

The problem is that networking amplifies what already exists.

If what's underneath isn't working, more connections simply expose a bigger problem.

Networking doesn't build a business.

It accelerates one.

The 1% is... the Idea

Many people never even start because they think they need the perfect idea.

They spend months (or decades) waiting for inspiration.

Yet history tells a very different story.

There are countless examples of brilliant products that disappeared.

There are equally countless examples of average products that became billion-dollar businesses.

Why?

Because businesses rarely succeed because of the brilliance of the idea alone.

The idea matters.

But only a little.

A good idea gives you a direction.

Execution determines the destination.

Plus the 9% networking.

And of course the other 90% which we haven't yet covered.

So in reality, the idea is only about 1% of the equation.

It needs to be viable.

It doesn't need to be revolutionary.

The 90% is... organization!!!

This is where almost everything happens.

The difference between a struggling business and a thriving one is rarely the networking.

It is almost never the idea.

It is the organization!!!

Organization is the invisible machinery that makes everything work.

It includes:

  • Sales

  • Marketing

  • Finance and cash flow

  • Customer onboarding

  • Follow-up processes

  • Team structure

  • Hiring

  • Training

  • Leadership

  • Operations

  • Email management

  • Standard operating procedures

  • Reporting

  • Client experience

  • And much more...

Every successful business is, at its core, an organized system.

Without organization, even the best salesperson doesn't bring the promised results.

Without organization, marketing becomes a waste of money.

Without organization, customers fall through the cracks, and don't return.

Without organization, growth creates chaos instead of profit.

Organization isn't "being tidy."

It's about building a machine that consistently produces results.

Networking Without Organization

Imagine filling a bucket with water.

Now imagine the bucket has fifty holes in it.

Or one massive hole...

What happens?

You can pour in more and more water.

It still leaks out.

Networking is like pouring more water into the bucket.

Organization is plugging the holes and creating a better bucket that catches more water while the bucket expands..

Most businesses don't need more opportunities.

They need to stop losing the opportunities (due to bad organization) they already have or could have.

THE Takeaway

If you're looking for the highest return on your effort, focus your energy where it matters most.

  • 9%: Build relationships.

  • 1%: Make sure your idea is viable.

  • 90%: Get organized.

Because networking doesn't create success.

It magnifies it.

When the organization is strong and the idea is sound, networking becomes an accelerator.

Without them, it's just activity.

Success is not about luck or just knowing the right people. It’s about building a strong foundation that supports growth and adapts to challenges.

The real competitive advantage isn't who you know.

It's what your business is capable of doing once you meet them.
